Weekend Box Office: 'Inside Out' Breaks Records, But 'Jurassic World' Still #1
by Andy Neuenschwander
One would think that if a movie, in its opening weekend, brought in $91.1 million and set the record for highest all-time opening for a Pixar film, it would top the box office list.
One would be wrong.
"Jurassic World" is still the #1 movie at the box office in its second weekend, bringing in an incredible $102 million. That puts it at the #2 second weekend domestic gross of all time, just $1 million shy of "The Avengers." In total, "Jurassic World" has brought in $398 million domestically in just two weeks and is just shy of $1 billion globally.
That means that "Inside Out" came in second in its opening weekend, breaking Pixar's streak of #1 openings. However, the people at Disney/Pixar can't be too upset, considering that the movie smashed box office expectations with its $91.1 million haul, easily besting the project $65 million.
Two holdovers took third and fourth place, as the Melissa McCarthy action-comedy "Spy" brought in $10.5 million in its third week for a total of $74.3 million thus far, while "San Andreas" brought in $8.2 million for a total of $132.2 million over four weeks.
In fifth place was the indie offering "Dope," starring Zoe Kravitz and "Workaholics" star Blake Anderson, along with a cast of relative unknowns. The high school drug comedy brought in a modest $6 million over an equally modest 2,002 theaters.
Here are the top five for the week, with cumulative totals:
1. "Jurassic World" - $102M ($398M)
2. "Inside Out" - $91.1M
3. "Spy" - $10.5M ($74.3M)
4. "San Andreas" - $8.2M ($132.2M)
5. "Dope" - $6M
