Weekend Box Office: ‘Identity Thief’ Steals Top, ‘Warm Bodies’ Cooling Down.

Two new movies opened to the top 5 this weekend. “Identity Thief” stole the top spot, but “Side Effects” wasn’t able to knock “Warm Bodies” out of the top.

In the first spot, “Identity Thief” opened to a hefty $34.5 million. This R-rated comedy is ranked among the highest earners for its genre, crushing even “Horrible Bosses” and “Bridesmaids”. However, it likely won’t last. So far, it’s managed to earn a “rotten” 23% at Rotten Tomatoes, naming stars Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman as the movie’s one saving grace.

Second comes “Warm Bodies”, still lingering from its #1 spot last week. The movie has fallen 44% to bring in $11.4 million. Its ratings are still holding strong (a 78% at Rotten Tomatoes), almost guaranteeing a top 5 spot for weeks to come.

In third place is newcomer “Side Effects”. It opened to $9.3 million in revenue. This thriller flick by Steven Soderbergh, director of “Magic Mike”, “Contagion”, and “Haywire”, amongst many others, has opened to very favorable reviews (holding an 85% at Rotten Tomatoes). Perhaps it is the vague and mysterious trailers to be blamed, but the film will likely hold strong as word gets out about it.

In fourth place is, no surprise here, “Silver Linings Playbook”. The movie holds strong in the top 5, bringing in $6.4 million, and only falling 17% from last week.

And in fifth place is, again no surprise here, “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters”. It brought in a hefty $5.8 million, but fell 39% from last week. It isn’t bound for the top 5 spot for long, and will likely fall off the list next week.
