Weekend Box Office - 'Identity Thief' Steals Top Again.
by Zack WellsLooks like the nation was focused on The Academy Awards this weekend, as general box office reports were pretty sad.
Opening in the top spot this weekend was “Identity Thief” once again. It crawled back to the top, despite falling 41%, earning only $14 million. It’s totaled a hefty sum of $93.6 million, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2013 so far, and is likely to pass the $100 million mark this coming weekend.
In second place was newcomer “Snitch”, bringing in $13.2 million. Snitch, an action-thriller starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, has opened to very mixed reviews, but is generally liked, and Dwayne Johnson’s performance is said to be one of his best. The movie will likely hold in the top 5 for a while longer, until the upcoming March releases knock it away.
In third place was the family-friendly “Escape from Planet Earth”. It moved up this week, from last week’s fourth place. It only fell 33%, and brought in a cool $10.7 million, to bring the total gross to almost $35 million.
In fourth is “Safe Haven”, falling 51% to bring in $10.5 million. The Sparks adaptation so far has grossed almost $48 million, and should finish well ahead of Nicholas Sparks’ other novel adaptations.
In fifth place is “A Good Day To Die Hard” falling hard from its first place spot last week. It dropped 59% to only $10.2 million in revenue. Looks like the horribly awful reviews and ratings (A 16% on Rotten Tomatoes) finally caught up to it, and people realizes their money is better spent elsewhere… Though none of the top 5 have scored about a 60%.
Other newcomer, “Dark Skies” opened in 6th, pulling in $8.2 million. The movie has received pretty awful reviews (earning a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes), and suffers from lake of advertisement. It doesn’t help that genre rival “The Last Exorcism Part II” (Ironic title is ironic) is opening in the coming weeks.
