Weekend Box Office: 'Hidden Figures' Stays on Top

The second full weekend of 2017 was a rough one for new wide-release movies. None of the five new contenders this week was able to seriously challenge last week's number-one movie, Hidden Figures, and some of the new movies are facing a grim financial outlook.

Hidden Figures took the top spot with just over $20 million for the three-day weekend. That's a remarkable hold from last week's $22 million, which allowed Hidden Figures to take the top slot away from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Second place went to La La Land, the musical romance that's been doing strong, steady business since it went into limited release last month. In third place was the animated Sing, which has also been one of the most consistent performers across the turn of the new year.

Somewhat surprisingly, the strongest of the new movies was the horror film The Bye Bye Man, which took fifth place with $13.4 million. Sixth place went to Patriots Day, whose $12 million was unexpectedly weak.

Also weak were the fantasy comedy Monster Trucks and the Jamie Foxx thriller Sleepless, which took in $10.5 and $8.4 million, respectively.

The biggest loser, though, was Ben Affleck's Live by Night, which expanded into wide release this weekend. It took in just $5.4 million and landed in eleventh place.
