Weekend Box Office: 'Harry Potter' Finale Shatters 'Dark Knight' Record

Merlin's beard! This final "Harry Potter" movie is making so much money they're going to need a second vault at Gringott's. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" continues to break records as it passed "The Dark Knight" to gross more money domestically than any other movie in history.

"Harry Potter 7" grossed somewhere between $163 million and $168.6 million, depending on sources and tracking for Sunday. Regardless of what the Monday actuals turn out to be, the movie has passed the previous record-holder, "The Dark Knight," which drew in $158.4 million over its first weekend. It should be noted that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" was bolstered by 3D ticket sales, which may be the only reason that it passed Christopher Nolan's "Batman" sequel, but only about 43% of audiences over the weekend saw the movie in 3D.

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" hit a new benchmark over the weekend, as the movie grossed another $23.5 million to pass the $300 million mark domestically and settle at a cumulative total of $305 million. The threequel is the first movie of the year to pass $300 mil domestically.

"Horrible Bosses" stayed strong in its second weekend, drawing another $17.5 million. That's a drop of less than 40% from its surprising first-week haul, and that puts its cume so far at a healthy $58.9 million. R-rated comedies continue to perform exceptionally well this summer!

"Zookeeper" also (somewhat surprisingly) stayed strong in its second weekend. Despite awful reviews, the Kevin James comedy earned another $12.5 million, a drop of only 38%, bringing its cume to $42.5 million over two weeks. That puts the movie halfway to its roughly $80 million budget domestically, so there may be hope for "Zookeeper" yet.

Coming in fifth by a slim margin was "Cars 2," which drew another $8.3 million. That put it ahead of the new "Winnie the Pooh," which released this weekend and took in about $8 million.
