Weekend Box Office: Gods of Egypt Falls Behind Deadpool

Deadpool, the year's biggest movie so far, cruised to a third number-one weekend in a row, while Gods of Egypt, the biggest flop of the year so far, struggled to sell tickets during its first few days of release. The week's other two new movies were out of contention for the top spot, too, leaving Deadpool alone for at least one more week of dominance.

Gods of Egypt's lack of success was not unexpected. Its $14 million take for the weekend was in line with predictions, but that doesn't mean the movie's performance wasn't disappointing. The film had a production budget of about $140 million and a marketing budget of about $30 million, and a $14 million opening weekend means that film is all but certain to be in the red by the end of its run.

Disappointment aside, Gods of Egypt managed to take second place for the week ahead of Kung Fu Panda 3 and Risen, which took in $9 million and $7 million respectively. The fifth spot will ultimately go to one of the week's new releases; both Eddie the Eagle and Triple 9 had earned just over $6 million according to early estimates, and the ultimate fifth-place finisher won't be certain until final numbers come in.
