Weekend Box Office: 'Evil Dead' Kills, 'Jurassic Park' Roars Back to Life

Nostalgia seemed to be the theme of this weekend’s box office, with the “Evil Dead” remake resurrecting itself to claim the top spot and 1993’s “Jurassic Park” in 3D close behind.

“Evil Dead” pulled in $26 million for its opening weekend, giving it the 10th rank in horror remakes. With originals Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell sticking around as producers, audiences were reassured enough to make it out to the new version, which stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez.

It’s estimated the movie will bring in around $50 million for its run.

In a tie for second place, animated “The Croods” has clung to its high ranking, sharing the spot with Bruce Willis’ “G.I. Joe Retaliation.” Both films brought in right around $21.1 million for the weekend.

In fourth place, the original “Jurassic Park,” which opened in 3D, brought in $18.2 million. The 1993 classic (and one of the highest grossing films ever) has been re-released for its 20th anniversary. IMAX showings accounted for about $6 million of the weekend’s numbers, which makes it the highest IMAX share of a nationwide release.

Rounding out the top five, “Olympus Has Fallen” continues to do better than initially expected, adding $10.4 million to its gross.

Tyler Perry’s “Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor” only managed to rake in about $10 million, giving it a pretty large decline (54 percent) from last weekend. However, for a Tyler Perry film, it is holding strongest since 2007’s “Why Did I Get Married??”

Oz: The Great and Powerful” continues to do well in the top ten, pulling in about $8.1 million.

Stephanie Meyer’s “The Host,” though far behind “Twilight” numbers, has maintained a spot in the top ten, ranking number eight with $5.2 million.

Wrapping up the winners for the weekend are “The Call,” which $3.5 million, and finally “Admission,” with around $2 million.
