Weekend Box Office: 'Dredd' Bombs, 'End of Watch' Beats Jennifer Lawrence

It was such a close weekend at the box office that the Sunday estimates left us with a three-way tie. It wasn't until the Monday actuals came out that we had an idea of which movie was #1 for the weekend. Unfortunately for movie execs, the three-way tie was only around $13 million, and not a more lucrative total.

So, which movie was #1? That would be Jake Gyllenhaal starrer "End of Watch," which took the top spot with $13.2 million after a slightly stronger Sunday than the competition. The cop movie also earned the highest Cinemascore among new movies over the weekend with a strong A-, adding to solid critic reviews.

That left other new openers "Trouble with the Curve" and "House at the End of the Street" in second and third place, though it's still almost too close to call. "Curve," which stars Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams, might have the slight edge with $12.9 million, while "House," a horror film with "The Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence in the lead, looks to be just short of that with $12.8 million.

Fourth and fifth place went to "Finding Nemo 3D," which earned another $9.4 million for a total of $29.9 million, and "Resident Evil: Retribution," which pulled in $6.7 million in its second weekend for a cumulative total of $33.4M.

That all means bad news for "Dredd 3D," the second attempt at an adaptation of the Judge Dredd comic books. The action flick earned surprisingly good reviews, but they weren't enough to fill seats as the movie earned only $6.3 million in this opening weekend. Fortunately the movie was fairly cheap to make at around $50 million. However, it would seem that the box office is still not totally receptive to any ol' superhero movie, despite Marvel's success with some more obscure characters.
