Weekend Box Office: Divergent Can't Topple Zootopia

The weekend box-office race went as predicted, with Zootopia coming out on top for the third weekend in a row and The Divergent Series: Allegiant following in second place. Less expected was the particularly poor showing of the Divergent film, which underperformed its predecessors by a wide margin.

As far as new releases go, Divergent had the weekend largely to itself. The only other new wide release for the week was the faith-based drama Miracles from Heaven, and that film was unlikely to cut into the young-adult audience that was the target of Divergent. Yet the third installment in the Divergent franchise was only able to bring in $29.1 million for the weekend, a decline of nearly half from the $52 million that The Diverent Series: Insurgent earned on its opening weekend last year.

Thanks to Divergent's weak opening, Zootopia had no trouble securing first place with its $38 million take. Miracles from Heaven wrapped up third place with $15 million for the weekend; its five-day total, after a Wednesday opening, was $18.6 million. Rounding out the top five were 10 Cloverfield Lane, which earned $12.5 million in its second week of release, and Deadpool, which hung on for $8 million.
