Weekend Box Office: How Did Oscar Winners Do?

It's a well-established fact that films nominated for major Oscars get a bump at the box office, a boost that often results in movies that were mostly overlooked by mainstream audiences enjoying more financial success after they get the Academy's seal of approval. While the Oscars were being handed out last weekend, most of the big winners were still in theaters, but were moviegoers eager to see them?

Of the movies that took home the top awards, only The Revenant, which won the Best Actor Oscar for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Director for Alejandro Inarritu, cracked the top 10, managing to edge out Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The Revenant has been an unqualified hit, and it's still performing well in its tenth week of release.

The rest of the top award winners struggled to click with broad audiences. Spotlight, which won Best Picture, was the next-highest-ranked of the big winners, but it barely made the top 20, coming in 20th just ahead of fellow nominee Brooklyn. Room, which earned the Best Actress award for Brie Larson, was close behind in 23rd place. The Danish Girl, which took Best Supporting Actress for Alicia Vikander, was in 46th place, but Bridge of Spies, which took home the Best Supporting Actor award for Mark Rylance, was already gone from theaters and not in the competition.
