Weekend Box Office: Did 'Horrible Bosses' Dethrone 'Transformers 3?'

Apparently, the raunchy comedy movie is back in a big way. After "The Hangover: Part II" set all kinds of records and "Bridesmaids" became the highest-grossing R-rated female comedy ever, it's not surprise that "Horrible Bosses" also did well in its opening weekend. But did it do well enough to take first place over "Transformers: Dark of the Moon?"

Not quite. "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" remained a powerhouse at the box office this weekend, pulling in another $47 million in its second weekend. Since the movie opened early last week, played over the July 4th weekend, and was pushed hard in 3D by Michael Bay, the domestic cume for "Transformers 3" is now $261 million. That's a pretty massive number for a movie in its second week. Even more impressive is the movie's global cumulative total of $645 million.

But "Horrible Bosses" did very well indeed, earning a cool $28.1 million. Though it's R-rated and pretty raunchy (especially thanks to Jennifer Aniston), the movie has wide appeal with three big stars as the titular bosses (Aniston, Kevin Spacey and Colin Farrell) and three cult-favorite comedic actors as the put-upon employees (Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman and Charlie Day). The movie was probably also helped by generally positive reviews, with a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes and a mostly positive audience response.

The reviews were not as kind to the Kevin James comedy "Zookeeper," which came in third place in its opening weekend with $21 million. That's a respectable number for a comedy starring James, who is recognized but not a huge star, especially considering the advertising has been quiet about the celebrities that voiced the animals (such as Adam Sandler). However, with all that CGI animal talking going on, the budget for "Zookeeper" was around $80 million, which will be tough to make up.

Fourth place went to "Cars 2" which, despite being the worst-reviewed Pixar movie yet, remains strong and earned another $15.2 million for a cume of $148.8 million. Yet another raunchy R-rated comedy took fifth place as "Bad Teacher" drew another $9 million to total $78.7 million domestically.
