Weekend Box Office: Daddy's Home and Joy Perform Well

It goes without saying that Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens was the top movie at the box office this weekend, but that blockbuster wasn't the only movie selling tickets. Theaters were full of new movies for the week of Christmas, and moviegoers were enthusiastic about seeing most of them.

The Will Ferrell comedy Daddy's Home will almost certainly come in second for the weekend and could ultimately earn more than $40 million by the end of the day on Sunday. That's light years behind Star Wars' estimated $150 million for the weekend, but it's still an extremely strong showing for the comedy.

Third place will probably go to Joy, the comedy-drama starring Jennifer Lawrence. That film is expected to take in around $20 million, and that's likely to be good enough for third place.

Will Smith's sports drama Concussion had a respectable weekend, too, and is expected to earn about $12 million. The weakest of the weekend's new movies is the surfing action movie Point Break, which will probably take in somewhere around $11 million. While that's almost as much as Concussion is likely to make, it's important to note that Point Break had a production budget of around $100 million and was a much bigger financial risk.
