Weekend Box Office: The Boss Battles Batman v Superman
by EG
The battle for the top spot at the box office this weekend is turning out to be a very close contest between two critically panned movies. Melissa McCarthy's The Boss ran into the weekend performing a little better than expected, and Batman v Superman continued its downhill slide, resulting in a virtual tie by the time the weekend reached its mid point.
Batman v Superman was predicted to earn about $25 million for the weekend, but by late Saturday, it looked as if the superhero saga was underperforming and would likely finish the weekend with about $21 million in ticket sales. That would be a big 58% drop-off from last weekend's take, which was itself an even bigger 69% drop from the movie's opening weekend.
Predictions ahead of the weekend had The Boss earning about $20 million, but McCarthy's comedy, which raked in mostly negative reviews from professional critics, was doing a little better than expected and looked set to earn about $23 million for the weekend.
The weekend's other new release, the gamer-oriented action flick Hardcore Henry, was performing pretty much as expected, and its weekend earnings should come in around $5.5 million. That would probably put the film in fifth place, behind Zootopia and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.
