Weekend Box Office: 'Beauty and the Beast' Bests 'Power Rangers'

Power Rangers had almost no chance of taking the top spot at the box office this week, but it performed pretty well in its debut for a strong second-place finish. Meanwhile, Disney's Beauty and the Beast continued its monstrous run at the box office, turning in a second weekend that would be an impressive opening weekend for most movies.

Beauty took the number-one slot for the second weekend in a row with a weekend domestic gross of $88 million. That's a drop of only about 50 percent from last week, a respectable hold for a movie that opened with $175 million. Beauty has now earned more than $300 million domestically and nearly $700 million worldwide.

Second place went to Power Rangers, which took in $40.5 million for the weekend. That was at the high end of predictions for the film's performance, and audience enthusiasm was a bit more pronounced than expected. However, Power Rangers will have to have more than one pretty good weekend to turn a profit, given its $100-million production budget.

Also possibly in trouble profit-wise is the week's third-place movie, Kong: Skull Island. Despite taking first place two weeks ago, it hasn't been a stellar performer. This week it took in $14 million, and its domestic total stands around $133 million. That's more than $50 million short of its $185-million production budget, and its momentum is slowing by the day.

This week's other two new releases, Life and CHiPs, came in fourth and seventh, respectively, and CHiPs in particular had a disappointing debut, earning just $7.6 million.
