Weekend Box Office: 'Bad Grandpa' Rules, 'Gravity' Retreats

Who would have thought that film to finally knock "Gravity" from the top spot at the box office would be a low-brow comedy with very little plot to speak of? With all due respect to "Bad Grandpa," it's likely  that "Gravity"'s reign would have run its course by this weekend regardless of the competition, but the "Jackass" spin-off performed beyond expectations and took the crown handily.

"Bad Grandpa" opened with $32 million in ticket sales for the weekend, making it the second-biggest "Jackass" movie behind "Jackass 3D." The new spin-off got a significant boost from its audience composition, which skewed much older than those for the other "Jackass" films, whose audiences were primarily male and under 25.

In its fourth weekend, "Gravity" took in $20.3 million, enough for second place and enough to put the film very close to $200 million in domestic ticket sales. Third place went to "Captain Phillips," which remained strong in its third week and pulled in $11.8 million.

"The Counselor," a new thriller from director Ridley Scott, opened disappointingly, bringing in only $8 million. On the weekend before Halloween, the only new-ish horror movie in theaters, "Carrie," fell off by 63% after its weak opening last weekend; the film took in $5.9 million and secured sixth place in the box-office race.
