Weekend Box Office: 'Avengers' #3 of All Time, 'Snow White' Takes Top Spot
by Andy NeuenschwanderComing off of her "Twilight" run, it looks as though Kristen Stewart might still be a valuable box office asset. "Snow White and the Huntsman" came in first place in the domestic box office race this weekend, drawing a surprising $56.1 million. That's more than Universal expected, and a welcome sight for the studio after the abysmal performance by "Battleship."
In fact, "Huntsman"s' total is greater than the three-week total for "Battleship." More on that later.
In second place was "Men in Black III," dropping down to $28 million in its second weekend for a cumulative total of $111 million over two weeks. Things seem to be going about as expected for the MiB threequel: it's not a home run, but it isn't a disaster either.
"The Avengers" took third with a still-healthy $19.8 million, putting its domestic cume up to $541.5 mil. That puts it just past "The Dark Knight" on the list of top-grossing movies domestically and past "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" globally, making it officially the #3 movie of all time. That's not adjusting for inflation or ticket prices, though, and since "Dark Knight" was not 3D, "Avengers" has a slight leg up.
However, that's a drop of about 50% for "Avengers" from last week, meaning the action flick might be slowing down. The chances of it catching the global totals of "Avatar" and "Titanic," which hold the two spots ahead of it, are therefore not so great, especially when you consider that "Avengers" has another $700 million or so to go.
The gap between third and fourth place is a big one, as "Battleship" took fourth with just $4.7 million in its third week, for a cume of $55 mil. As mentioned before, that means that "Huntsman" beat its three-week total in one weekend, both putting the abysmal performance of "Battleship" in perspective and putting a bit of a damper on the success of "Huntsman" for Universal.
Fifth place went to "The Dictator," which followed right behind "Battleship" with $4.6 million, and follows right behind it in total as well with about $50 million.
"Prometheus" opened up overseas but has yet to release domestically, so that will be one to keep an eye on this coming weekend. As of now, it looks like "Huntsman" will be king for the near future.
