Weekend Box Office: Angry Birds Are Triumphant
by EG
Moviegoers this weekend were more excited about a new animated movie than they were about the superhero extravaganza that had been on top of the box office for the past two weeks. The Angry Birds Movie grabbed the top spot away from Captain America: Civil War, which fell to number two.
Angry Birds took in $39 million over the weekend, which was slightly below the most optimistic forecasts. The movie entered a favorable market, given that the last big animated movie to hit theaters, Zootopia, has already been around for 12 weeks. The Angry Birds will only have the youngster audience to themselves for four weeks, however, as Pixar's Finding Dory hits theaters on June 17.
Civil War earned $33 million for the weekend, enough to secure second place and bring the movie's domestic total take to $347 million. That puts the movie in second place for the year so far, just behind Deadpool and ahead of Zootopia.
This week's two other new movies landed in third and fourth places. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising took in about $22 million, a figure that's well short of the $30 million that most observers had expected it to earn over the weekend. The Nice Guys, starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, raked in just over $11 million, which was marginally better than the $10 million or so it was expected to earn.
