Weekend Box Office: '42' Is a Home Run
by Shannon KeirnanThis weekend, the box office saw the Jackie Robinson biopic “42” rise to the top. The film, which stars Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford, was expecting to rake in about $20 million or so for its opening weekend. Good word of mouth brought its premiere weekend take to about $27.3 million, so this film has hit it out of the park! Sorry.
In second place, despite horrific reviews, “Scary Movie 5” and its Lindsay Lohan/Charlie Sheen cameo brought in $15.5 million. The film also stars Ashley Tisdale and Simon Rex.
Holding firm to its spot in the top ten is animated, kid-friendly “The Croods,” which brought in $13.2 million for the weekend, sticking in the top five since its release. The film features the voice talents of Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone.
In fourth it’s “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” which has already done better than expected for itself, and still brought in an additional $10.8 million over the weekend.
The “Evil Dead” remake fell from its top slot after its release last weekend, dropping rapidly to number 5. Is this a bad sign for “Evil Dead?” It pulled in just $9.5 million, compared to last weekend’s $25.7 million.
“Jurassic Park” in 3D stayed strong with $8.8 million, taking the sixth spot. Rounding out the top ten were “Olympus Has Fallen” with $7.2 million, “Oz: The Great and Powerful” still sticking in the high rankings with $4.9 for this weekend’s run, and “Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor” with $4.5 million.
“The Place Beyond the Pines,” which stars Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, has only brought in $4 million for the weekend, due most likely to limited release of the film, which should be available in more theaters soon.
