Weekend Box Office: 'Hop' On Top, 'Source Code' and 'Insidious' Not As Sweet

It was bunnies versus bombers versus evil posessed children this weekend at the box office. Unsurprisingly, the cute littly fluffy bunnies won.

The animated/live-action children's movie "Hop" took the top spot this weekend with a big opening of $38.1 million. Even though the movie was projected to do well, that number exceeded the expectations of many, and considering the movie cost $63 million to produce, it's off to a great start.

The movie stars the voice of Russell Brand as the Easter Bunny's son, who runs away to Hollywood to pursue his dream of being a drummer. "Hop" was perhaps bolstered by positive audience reviews (an A- on Cinemascore) even though the critics were generally unhappy with it.

However, critics loved the new mind-bending thriller "Source Code" which placed second in this weekend's box office rankings. The movie, which comes from "Moon" director Duncan Jones, pulled in a respectable $15 million, about half of the movie's production costs. "Source Code" follows Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal), who wakes up on a train in another man's body eight minutes before the train is wrecked by a terrorist attack. Stevens' mission is to repeatedly re-live those eight minutes until he can identify the bomber, but along the way he falls in love with a fellow passenger (Michelle Monaghan).

In third place (and also in its opening weekend) was "Insidious," a new horror film from the production team behind "Saw" and "Paranormal Activity." Reviews were mixed but generally positive, and despite a familiar plot (family moves into house inhabited by evil spirits) it finds ways to provide great scares. "Insidious" drew in $13.5 million, and (like "Paranormal Activity" did) quickly exceeded its budget and started making a profit...the movie cost only $1.5 million to make!

Meanwhile, Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch" is in big trouble, having dropped nearly 70% from last week's gross, pulling in a measly $6.1 million in its second weekend and not even making the top five. Ouch.

  1. "Hop" - $38.1 million
  2. "Source Code" - $15 million
  3. "Insidious" - $13.5 million
  4. "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" - $10.2 million
  5. "Limitless" - $9.4 million
