Weekend Box Office: Captain America Still on Top
by EG
One of this week's new releases drew bigger audiences than expected, but its surprising performance was still no match for Captain America: Civil War. The Marvel superhero blockbuster continued its strong run after a dominant opening weekend last week, and it won the weekend box-office race with ease.
Money Monster, the satirical thriller starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, brought in an estimated $14 million for the weekend, well ahead of the $10 million that most predictions had it earning. While hardly a runaway hit, the film's relative success proved that there is an adult audience out there that's had enough of superhero movies. Money Monster will take third place for the weekend, behind Civil War and The Jungle Book.
The week's other new release, the Kevin Bacon horror film The Darkness, performed pretty much according to expectations, bringing in about $5 million. If estimates hold, that will put The Darkness in fourth place for the weekend.
Civil War's ticket sales fell off an estimated 59% from last weekend, a drop typical of big-opening movies. This weekend, the movie should take in about $73 million, putting it just short of $300 million in total domestic ticket sales. By the end of the weekend, Civil War will have earned just shy of $900 million worldwide.
