Weekend Box Office: Jungle Book Shatters Expectations

Disney's The Jungle Book was expected to be the weekend's top movie, but it outperformed even the most optimistic of predictions to become one of the biggest spring movies of all time. The week's two other new movies are having less spectacular weekends.

The Jungle Book was projected to earn around $75 million in the best case, but by late Saturday it was clear that the film was going to do much better than that by the end of the weekend. Estimates had the film scoring total earnings in excess of $90 million for the weekend, which would put it within striking distance of the second-best April opener ever, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Barbershop: The Next Cut will sit comfortably in second place for the weekend. That's where it was expected to be, although its estimated $20 million take is a bit below many predictions. Third place will likely go to Melissa McCarthy's The Boss, which will fade considerably from its first-place spot last week and earn only about $9.7 million. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will probably take fourth place with about $9.4 million, a steep 60% drop-off from last week. Criminal will likely squeak into fifth place with a very weak gross of about $6 million.
