Weekend Box Office: Zootopia Wins, 10 Cloverfield Lane Has Strong Showing

Disney's animated film Zootopia took the top spot at the box office this weekend as expected, but newcomer 10 Cloverfield Lane came on strong for a solid second-place finish. The other two new wide releases did much less well and probably won't be in the top five after the dust settles.

Zootopia continued to exercise its hold on family audiences and will earn close to $50 million by the end of the weekend. That's good enough for a first place finish for the second weekend in a row.

The J.J. Abrams-produced thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane pushed to an unexpectedly strong weekend after raking in an impressive $1.8 million on Thursday night. The film's total take for the weekend will probably be about $25 million, putting it in secure possession of second place.

The other two new releases, Sacha Baron Cohen's The Brothers Grimsby and The Young Messiah, did not fare well at the box office at all. Of the two, The Young Messiah did better, taking in about $4 million, and when the final weekend numbers are in, it will likely end up somewhere around seventh place. The Brothers Grimsby, however, was a major disappoint, earning only about $1.2 million, a performance that will barely get it into the top ten.
