Weekend Box Office: Maze Runner Outruns Competition
by EG
When it came to attracting young moviegoers this weekend, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials had little competition, and the young-adult franchise installment had no trouble winning the overall box-office race. Johnny Depp wasn't too far behind, though.
The Maze Runner got off to a quick start in its debut week, taking in about $11 million on Friday. Assuming that it keeps that pace all weekend, the movie should earn about $31 million over the three-day period and easily take the number one spot for the week.
Johnny Depp's Black Mass, a violent drama about real-life mob boss Whitey Bulger, didn't entirely disappoint in its debut, either. The film took in nearly $9 million on Friday and will like take in a total of about $24 million for the weekend. That will be enough to put it in second place.
Two other new movies got limited releases this weekend, and one of them did very well considering how few theaters were showing it. Everest was playing only in IMAX venues but still took in about $7 million, good enough for fifth place. Christian drama Captive opened in only 806 theaters and took in only approximately $1.8 million; that should be enough, however, to get the film into the top 10 for the weekend.
