Watch a Two-Headed Sarah Paulson Sing Fiona Apple on 'American Horror Story'
by Andy NeuenschwanderIf you missed last night's episode of "American Horror Story" you missed some scary stuff, but you also missed a Fiona Apple cover. Strange, considering the show is set in the 1940's.
Ryan Murphy has decided to go "Glee" with this season of "AHS," inserting musical numbers that cover modern songs despite the show's period setting. Last night, Sarah Paulson took the stage to perform Fiona Apple's "Criminal."
It's a strange decision on Murphy's part, but we'll allow it considering that it's a two-headed Paulson singing the song. Paulson is playing conjoined twins this season, providing the performance for two heads. The result is pretty impressive, both technically and on Paulson's part.
Murphy claims it's not necessarily his "Glee" background that inspired putting music into this season of "American Horror Story." Rather, he's taking a cue from one of his favorite directors: Baz Luhrmann.
"I really wanted to do an homage to my friend and idol Baz Luhrmann," Murphy said in an interview with E! News, "who does such amazing things with music and period. We didn't want to do Happy Days, we didn't want to do all '50s music. So, what we did was, we decided to do musical numbers when they're needed, not all the time, that feature artists who have identified as odd, different freaks, that felt like outcasts. We did Lana Del Rey, Kurt Cobain, David Bowie. People who I admire who really changed the landscape of music, based on them feeling like outsiders."
So far, we've heard the Bowie (Jessica Lange performed one of his songs in the season premiere) and some Fiona Apple, so expect to see those Lana Del Rey and Nirvana songs coming up.
