Watch the Trailer for Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow's New Rom-Com, 'Trainwreck'
by Andy Neuenschwander
When we heard that Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow were working on a movie together, we expected a comedy...but not necessarily a romantic comedy.
The first trailer for "Trainwreck" is out, though, and it's definitely a rom-com. It's a rom-com that subverts a number of the common tropes of the genre, sure, but it still seems pretty traditional tonally.
The movie centers on Schumer's character (also named Amy, natch), who has a severe aversion to monogamy after being more or less brainwashed against it by her father at a young age. Now an adult, Amy finds her personal life to exist only of a string of one-night stands...until she meets a charming sports physician (played by Bill Hader).
It all acts as a sort of fictional manifestation of Schumer's stand-up, which often talks about sex, relationships and the expectations put upon women in those categories in the modern world.
Though it's surprising that anyone would attempt a straight-up rom-com—a more or less dead genre—in the current market, if anyone can do it, it's Apatow. After all, "Knocked Up" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" were romantic comedies, more or less.
What matters is whether or not the movie is funny, which "Trainwreck" definitely seems to be based on this small sample.
