Watch: New 'Doctor Who' Teaser Shows Capaldi's Doctor, Sort of
by EGThe art of the teaser trailer is a subtle one. You’ve got to give audiences enough to get them excited, but you have to hold back enough that they don’t feel like they’ve already seen your show before it even airs. In a new teaser for the upcoming season of “Doctor Who,” the BBC errs way, way on the side of holding back.
The 16-second tease offers almost nothing beyond the promise that the series will debut a new, regenerated Doctor when it starts its new season in August. With rumbling sound effects building to the beginning of the “Doctor Who” theme, a black screen and the show’s title alternates with two quick glimpses of a silhouetted figure—presumably the new Doctor—standing in what looks like the glowing interior of the TARDIS. The teaser ends with the text “The New Doctor Lands.”
Fans have been anticipating the arrival of a new Doctor since last year, when it was announced that the current Doctor, played by Matt Smith, would be replaced by a new version played by Peter Capaldi. Capaldi had already made an appearance in last season’s Christmas special, and he was familiar to Whovians thanks to his involvement in a 2008 episode called “The Fires of Pompeii,” in which he played an ancient Roman, as well as another appearance in a different role in an episode of “Torchwood.”
