Watch Derek Jeter Hit a Walk-Off Single In His Last Home At-Bat

Watch Derek Jeter Hit a Walk-Off Single In His Last Home At-Bat Mr. October won't be making it into October this year, but that doesn't mean he can't go out in style.

Derek Jeter took his final at-bat at home in Yankee Stadium last night, and in a sport where outcomes of each plate appearance can be so unpredictable, the Yankees' golden boy couldn't have asked for a better result.

The crowd was already cheering madly as Jeter took the plate, having already announced that he will be retiring from baseball (at least as a player) after this season. With the Yankees unable to make the playoffs at this point, this would be Jeter's last chance to play as a Yankee at home in New York.

The score was tied 1-1 with one out in the bottom of the 9th inning; a situation designed for drama. The crowd's already deafening cheers rose somehow further when Jeter knocked a single up the right side, sending in the winning run.

Sure, a home run would have been more dramatic, but in a way it wouldn't be as true to who Jeter was as a player. The longtime Yankee shortstop wasn't a particularly legendary power hitter, nor was he an especially prolific base stealer. On defense he was even sub-par (or outright terrible, depending on whom you ask).

But Jeter did produce. At the end of his 20-year career, Jeter can claim a respectable .309 lifetime average with a .817 OPS. He was Rookie of the Year, he's a 14-time All-Star, and a multiple MVP in the season and the playoffs. He did all this by making his appearances, year in and year out, and always being a good, even if not great, player.

It's the most fitting ending to a long career, and whether you love or hate the Yankees, the video is likely to give you chills.
