Watch Chris Cornell of Soundgarden Sing Whitney Houston's 'I Will Always Love You' In Tribute
by Andy NeuenschwanderThere have been a number of tributes to Whitney Houston following her death, including the elaborate funeral and concert over the weekend with performances by singers like Alicia Keys. But when you think about singers who might do a Houston tribute, Chris Cornell doesn't immediately come to mind.
The singer and former frontman of Soundgarden took to the stage this weekend for a fundraiser for President Obama on his tour through Southern California. Cornell had a surprise for his fans: an acoustic version of "I Will Always Love You," as made famous by Houston on the soundtrack for "The Bodyguard."
"I just learned this," Cornell humbly told the crowd, "so when I mess it up, forgive me." He then launched into a very moving cover of the song, which was met with much cheering from the crowd.
