'Walking Dead' Is Getting a Spin-Off Series!
by Andy NeuenschwanderTelevision needs more zombies. AMC is here to help.
"The Walking Dead" could get a brand-new companion series, as a new pilot has been ordered by AMC from "TWD" creator Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson. Erickson will be the showrunner if the series gets picked up, with Kirkman staying on board at "Walking Dead."
The new series will take place within the world of "The Walking Dead," but will focus on a different set of characters in a different location. According to AMC president Charlie Collier, some of the most frequently asked questions from fans are about what's happening in other parts of the world while Rick and his crew handle their business.
It's an interesting thought, especially considering how narrow the focus is in "The Walking Dead." Then again, that narrow focus is what makes the show different from zombie epics like, say, "World War Z"; it's always been more of an individual character study than a story about pandemics and global society.
AMC has been considering the project since late 2013, when the most recent season of "The Walking Dead" continued to break cable ratings records. As of yet, there are no details on where the series will take place, or whether the characters that will be the focus of the show are ones that have appeared in the comic books.
Production on the pilot is set to start later this year. Meanwhile, the upcoming season of "The Walking Dead" premieres on October 12 at 9pm.
