'The Voice': Watch a Season 2 Contestant's Blind Audition
by Andy NeuenschwanderWith the ratings for the "American Idol" audition week languishing, it will be interesting to see how "The Voice" fares when it returns next week. Fans seem to be losing interest in the "Idol" process, choosing instead to tune in once Hollywood Week kicks off. But with "The Voice," the initial auditions are one of the best things about the show.
If you missed them last year, here's what makes them different: the singers perform and the judges listen with their backs turned. If they like what they hear, they hit the big red button and their chairs turn. If more than one judge presses the button, then the singer gets to choose her team.
The delight to this comes in the form of the judges' sometimes humorous reactions to the singers' appearances (last year they thought a male singer was a female based on his voice), and in the form of the trash-talking between the judges as they attempt to convince the singers to join their team.
The best way to learn how it works is to watch it happen, which is why "The Voice" has released the audition of one of the upcoming season two contestants, Lindsay. Her voice is also indicative of why the show is good: they tend to lean towards singers who are interesting and unique, rather than just going for a platoon of pop singers who sound mostly all alike.
