'The Voice' Season 3, Episode 10 Recap - 'The Battles #2'
by Andy NeuenschwanderThe battles continue! Will we see more steals tonight? Will Cee Lo make another terrible mistake in his matchups?
Our first matchup is Cody Belew vs. Domo, from Team Cee Lo, and it looks like Cee Lo hasn't Domo's attitude still bugs me, whereas Cody is about as likeable as ever... but with Cee Lo's taste and predilection for theatricality, you can bet he'll want to keep Domo around if he can. He gives them Telephone by Lady Gaga, which seems more geared toward Domo at first. But there is the opportunity for Cody to show off vocally, as it's a tougher song than you think.
It's clear when they start that both of them really know how to perform a song, as they've come up with some snappy choreography. The vocals aren't especially impressive, as both of them have some pitch issues here and there. See? Tougher song that you think.
The judges laud Domo a bit for reigning in her overconfidence a bit and being a little more controlled on stage, and because the song was in her comfort zone, the coaches side with her. But Cee Lo takes it in a different direction and goes with Cody! Yay Cody. Nobody goes for the steal with Domo. Poor Domo.
Eliminated: Domo
Aquile will go against Nathalie Hernandez for Team Christina, which should be a good matchup: Aquile has that smooth voice and Nathalie has that soft, lovely tone. Can the youngster upset the more experienced Aquile? They get "You Give Me Something" by Jim Morrison, and already Billie Joe thinks that Aquile sang it better than the original. Christina gives some coaching to Nathalie, who definitely has some work to do in terms of confidence and technique.
Aquile definitely has a stronger voice, but it would be tough to give up Nathalie's unique tone, especially considering how well the very similar Dia Frampton did in the first season. However, the coaches all seem to agree that Aquile is ready, while Nathalie isn't quite yet. Christina's choice is clear, and she goes with Aquile. No one goes for the steal with Nathalie.
Eliminated: Nathalie Hernandez
We also get Lisa Scinta vs. Celica Westbrook in a very quick hit for Christina, and Celica wins. Then Charlie Rey goes against Rudy Parris for Team Blake, and Rudy eliminates Charlie.
We get a much closer look at Caitlin Michele and Melanie Martinez, for Team Adam. Melanie's style is still totally quirky and cool, and Caitlin can still belt it. They're doing Ellie Goulding's "Lights," which should split the difference between their styles nicely: it can be a song that serves a strong voice like Caitlin's, or a breathy one like Melanie's. But both of them have a rough day in rehearsals, which actually puts Melanie in tears.
Things go much better during the actual performance, though. It's an interesting take, a much softer, more acoustic version. It suits them both very well. The coaches praise them both for their unique voices, but Adam ends up going with Melanie. A good choice. Naturally, though, Cee Lo and Blake aim to steal Caitlin after that strong performance. Blake lays on the praise, but Cee Lo wins Caitlin over with a "come to me, my dark princess." She goes Cee Lo.
Stolen: Caitlin Michele to Team Cee Lo
