'The Voice' Season 2, Episode 9 Recap - 'The Final Battles'
by Andy NeuenschwanderWe start off the last episode of the battle rounds with Team Cee Lo, where James Massone is facing off against Wade (sorry, WADE) with "True Colors." Odd, but hey, what else would you expect from Cee Lo? Boston boy James is a bundle of nerves, especially since he doesn't know the song.
Ne-Yo is impressed with James' voice, but also worries about his nerves. Babyface is even more impressed with WADE, and says he thinks of Luther Vandross and Al Green when he hears WADE sing. Even more impressed is Cee Lo, who starts seriously crying after their rehearsal. "Okay," he says. "I surrender." One word: histrionic.
When the actual performance starts, it's hard to see why Cee Lo was so moved. Both WADE and James hit some sour notes and their harmonies are off. They recover a bit halfway through, but it's almost like they're singing two different songs. Adam, Christina and Blake all side with James, though they note that there is some work to be done. Christina notes WADE's pitchiness.
Cee Lo admits some bias toward WADE, how he wanted to make him "soul brotha number two." But ultimately, Cee Lo goes with James.
Winner: James Massone
Team Adam time, and Mathai will be facing off against Nicole. Nicole is already worried that she'll be eclipsed by Mathai's personality onstage, and she's right to worry: Mathai is a favorite for sure. Adam wants to give Nicole a piano on stage so she can do her piano country thang.
Robin says Nicole's voice is "like morning coffee on the veranda." Nicole is still intimidated by Mathai, despite the fact that Nicole has about a foot on her in height. Seriously. Things don't go better for her at the rehearsal, as Adam nixes the piano idea when it ends up just being a distraction.
Their performance of "Love Song" is solid, but as Nicole feared, Mathai looks beyond comfortable up there. Blake sides with Mathai, noting that Nicole seems out of breath. Christina thinks it was Mathai, a "no-brainer." Cee Lo calls Nicole "a little generic." Ouch, man. Sure enough, Adam goes with Mathai. No surprise there.
Winner: Mathai
Christina puts country duo The Line against rapper Moses Stone, possibly in an effort to out-weird Cee Lo. She also gives them "(Can't Get No) Satisfaction," which The Line complains about because it's not country, and now I really hope Moses wins.
After working with Lionel Richie, it looks like he might... Moses can actually sing pretty well. Christina brings up Drake as an example of a "hybrid" hip hop artist, something that Moses can aspire to. The Line, meanwhile, comes across as pretty amateur here: Jewel wants them to actually feel the song and not be a smiling wedding/bar band, and when they get on stage they say they aren't used to moving while singing.
The performance is truly strange. Hailey of The Line has a tambourine half the time, and Moses is attempting some kind of half Jagger impression with his dance moves. Cee Lo loves it. Adam sides with The Line. Blake agrees it was "pretty weird," and unsurprisingly sides with The Line. Christina, thankfully, goes with Moses. He could be really interesting down the line. Speaking of The Line, Leland is a graceful loser, thanking Christina for the opportunity and everything, while Hailey is a total jerk about it, walking off the stage with a scowl and refusing to talk to the cameras. Well exCUSE me.
Winner: Moses Stone
Back to Team Adam, where Adam is putting Karla Davis and Orlando Napier, and Karla was dreading it from the start. He gives them "Rich Girl" by Hall and Oates, and I go "Ha!" But as it turns out, this is the wrong song for them, especially Orlando, who can't sing that high. So instead they go with "Easy" by the Commodores, because obviously Lionel Richie could give them the rights.
In the confidence category, Orlando definitely wins, as Karla is pretty timid. He also gets some good notes from Robin Thicke (who is still being hilariously poetic). We'll see if he actually takes them.
The both of them do some interesting little vocal tricks, but the performance lacks the belting power that Robin was talking about, making it a little flat. Sure enough, Christina calls it "lackluster." Cee Lo sides with Orlando, and Blake doesn't see a clear winner. Surprisingly, Adam goes with Karla, and she's pretty cute about it, crying when she leaves the stage and being totally confused by it.
Winner: Karla Davis
For Team Blake, Jordan Rager and Naia Kete will be singing "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, and Jordan says he isn't familiar with it. I have no idea how he managed that. Naia, on the other hand, did "The Lazy Song" for her audition and must be familiar with the song. Clearly. Worse, though, is that Jordan doesn't really know how to harmonize.
But when they get to the rehearsal on the stage, Jordan has really stepped it up. He holds his own in the performance for a while, but Naia is clearly the more interesting and experienced performer. The mentors side with Naia, and Blake agonizes for a bit before choosing Naia as well.
Winner: Naia Kete
So Cee Lo's remaining contestants, Tony Vincent and Justin Hopkins, will be facing off with "Faithfully" by Journey. Cee Lo says he picked it because "it's epic," which should work great for Tony, who took on Queen. The rehearsal once again puts Cee Lo in tears, and to be fair, it was a pretty solid performance this time (at least the little clip we heard). With Tony's range and Justin's grit, this should be good.
The performance is pretty good, but probably not as epic as Cee Lo hoped it would be. Tony looks like Sgt. Pepper's evil twin. Cee Lo notes that he was moved by both of them, but ultimately goes with Tony. Not a big surprise, considering Tony's range and level of strangeness, both of which Cee Lo can put to use.
Winner: Tony Vincent
