Viral Video Time: Gotye Makes a Mash-Up of All the 'Somebody That I Used to Know' Covers
by Andy NeuenschwanderThere are few songs in history as universally and simultaneously loved and hated as Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know." The catchy little earworm that could rocketed up the charts and landed on "Glee" and "Saturday Night Live" thanks to its hooky chorus, relatable lyrics, and Peter Gabriel sensibilities, but there was another reason why the song got so popular: a YouTube cover by Walk Off the Earth.
You might even be better acquainted with that version than the original: in the video, all five members of the band play on one guitar and sing the song. That gimmick was enough to get the cover more than 130 million views on YouTube and counting, which compared pretty favorably to the nearly 300 million that Gotye's original has.
From there, the song exploded across YouTube, with just about every musician, comedian, and not quite musician or comedian who nonethless had a video camera providing a cover. This was apparently no skin off of Gotye's bodypainted back, as he has created a mash-up of all of these covers himself as a celebration of his fans.
The video is over five minutes of various covers of the song cut together to make one unified whole. That's quite a feat, considering that the covers range from your basic acoustic guitars to banjos, ukeleles, smooth jazz saxophone, harp, piano, a capella, heavy metal and more.
So, the gauntlet has been thrown, Carly Rae Jepsen. Let's see you make a mash up of all of those "Call Me Maybe" covers, eh?
