Violent, Gritty 'Power Rangers' Reboot Is Now Online
by Andy Neuenschwander
We've known for a while now that live-action "Power Rangers" movies are being considered, but we didn't expect the first one to be quite so dark!
An independent short film was released today featuring the Power Rangers as you've never seen them before: namely, gritty, violent and cursing up a storm.
The short was created by filmmaker Joseph Kahn and, according to his statement accompanying the video, he did it pretty much just for fun. "...not a pilot, not a series, not for profit, strictly for exhibition," Kahn wrote. "This is a bootleg experiment not affiliated or endorsed by Saban Entertainment or Lionsgate nor is it selling any product. I claim no rights to any of the characters (don't send me any money, not kickstarted, this film is free)."
The film stars James Van Der Beek of "Dawson's Creek" fame and "Battlestar Galactica" and "Longmire" star Katee Sackhoff, and boy is it NSFW. You might remember the "Power Rangers" of your youth, but we're betting you don't remember quite this much blood and swearing.
EDIT: It seems as though the NSFW version has been removed from Vimeo, possibly because of a copyright claim. The SFW version is still up on YouTube, but possibly not for long.
