Video: The 'Community' Web Series Spin-Off That Isn't Legally a Spin-Off
by Andy NeuenschwanderFan films and parodies are nothing new, especially in the age of YouTube, where anyone with a webcam can start a webseries and then sell a TV show (damn you, Annoying Orange!). But a fan film starring the actor who played the role in the actually TV show that the fan film is based on? That might be a first.
Considering the Internet's interest in NBC's cult phenomenon "Community," it might not be surprising to hear that there's a web series spin-off of the show. The project is a series of webisodes featuring Inspector Spacetime, the character in the fictional TV series of the same name that Troy and Abed are obsessed with in "Community." Travis Richey, the actor who plays Inspector Spacetime in "Community," is producing and starring in the web series himself.
Here's the catch: this is all being done without any involvement with NBC. Since they own the rights to Inspector Spacetime, the web series is officially titled "Untitled Web Series About a Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time."
Any more tongue-in-cheek and you'd pull a muscle.
It looks as though the series will be pretty similar in tone to the one featured on "Community," though with some extra emphasis on parodizing "Doctor Who." The Inspector also has a new companion, as apparently Constable Reggie isn't legally available, either.
The web series will premiere on September 10. In the meantime, check out the trailer below:
