'Veronica Mars' Reaches $2 Million Goal in Just 10 Hours
by Zack WellsIn just 10 hours, 33,000 people have pledged over $2,076,017 towards a “Veronica Mars” film, with over a month still left to pledge.
Kristen Bell, the show’s star, and series creator Rob Thomas have had enough of waiting and hoping for the adaptation to hit Hollywood. They are taking matters into their own hands and counting on fans to help fund the project.
The two have launched a Kickstarter campaign in an effort to raise the money that they require to get the ball rolling. The goal is a simple $2 million in 30 days. If they accomplish this, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution will put the movie into production, and cover marketing, promotion, legal stuff, and distribution.
So, now that they’ve met their goal, what’s next? Well, rest easy! Production will start this summer, with a hopeful release date of early 2014.
This whole endeavor is really a monument to the power of fans everywhere. Kickstarter, the website hosting the campaign even commented on this overwhelming response. “Wow. ‘Veronica Mars’ reached $1m in 4 hours 24 minutes, a new Kickstarter record.”
Seeing the power of the fans, do you think other cult hit shows, such as “Pushing Daisies”, “Firefly”, and “Dead Like Me” will see similar campaigns starting up? I remain optimistically hopeful.
However, everything will hinge on whether or not a “Veronica Mars” movie is made. If their plans get shut down for whatever reason (like Warner Bros. pulling out their support), all that money will go back to the pledgers, and the fans will once again wallow and hope for some more of their favorite show.
