'The Vampire Diaries,' 'Arrow,' and 'Supernatural' Get Picked Up Early
by Shannon KeirnanCertain fans don’t have to wait and worry about their favorite shows coming back next season… CW has already picked up “Arrow,” “The Vampire Diaries,” and “Supernatural” for their return, ahead of schedule.
This puts freshman “Arrow” into a second season in fall. The superhero show debuted last year and featured the highest series premiere since 2009. It is currently the network’s most-watched show, with 4.3 million viewers.
“The Vampire Diaries,” which will enter its fifth season this fall, is also doing well, especially among the target demographics of adults 18-34, as well as women 18-34.
“Supernatural” has been picked up for its ninth season, and remains strong in viewership despite its long run.
“We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit 'Arrow' and fan favorite 'Supernatural' on Wednesday night, and the continued success of 'The Vampire Diaries' on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that,” said network President Mark Pedowitz.
“Not only do 'Arrow,' 'Supernatural' and 'The Vampire Diaries' perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially. I’m thrilled to have all three shows returning to our schedule next season.”
The success of these shows comes as good news for the CW. Their once-popular “Gossip Girl” wrapped up with its series finale last month. The medical drama “Emily Owens, M.D.” was short lived and cancelled quickly. Though the network airs “90210,” viewership is not promising, and cancellation in the near future seems highly possible.
