Vampire Diaries to End in 2017

Next year, the world is going to lose a few vampires. You'd think that would be a good thing, but if you're a fan of The Vampire Diaries, you're probably not going to be happy about it. One of the series' stars announced this week that the next season of the popular CW vampire drama will be its last.

Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore, told fans at a convention in Nashville last Sunday that the upcoming eighth season of the series will be the final one.

"We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice," he said.

Nina Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert, had already left the series at the end of season 6, and Kat Graham, who plays Bonnie Bennett, had announced that she would be leaving the series at the end of season 7. With the defection of major cast members, it looked as if the series was winding down, and Somerhalder's announcement confirmed what many had already suspected.

The CW has not yet made an official announcement about the fate of the series, though. The network gave the series the go-ahead for its seventh season just a few weeks, and its spin-off series, The Originals, also received a renewal order.
