Unapologetic Mindy McCready: 'What I Did Was Protect My Child'

Unapologetic Mindy McCready: 'What I Did Was Protect My Child' Country singer Mindy McCready has spoken out in a new 20/20 interview airing Friday with an account of her cross-country custody drama with son Zander, and the details, if you believe them, are sort of heartbreaking.

As authorities in Arkansas took McCready's son away from her in response to a ruling by by a Florida court, McCready told 20/20 that her son was crying out not to be separated from his mother.

"He was screaming, 'Please don't touch me, please don't touch me, please don't touch my mommy. Please, leave me alone, I want to be with my mommy,'" McCready says.

The singer, who is currently pregnant with twins, defended her actions in taking her son across state lines and hiding from authorities at her boyfriend's rural Arkansas lake house in the 20/20 interview, which was excerpted today in People.

"I know there are rules that are written down that we're supposed to follow, and guidelines that we're supposed to follow, but there's a difference between right and wrong, and right and wrong in my opinion should come first, always," said McCready, who refuses to apologize for her actions.

"What I did was to protect my child, and there's not a person in the world that's going to tell me that that is wrong," said McCready.

Previews of the interview also acknowledge two new developments that could effect the status of her custody battle. After a judge in Arkansas made a ruling in the case which was sealed from public records, McCready emerged with a smile on her face, saying the judge was "a good man."

ABC also has said the Friday interview will include shocking new allegations of "family secrets" from McCready, which might explain some of her concerns for her son's safety.
