'Twilight' Writer Melissa Rosenberg's Next Project Will Be Sci-Fi Series 'Earthseed'

The traditionally male-dominated entertainment industry has left little in terms of strong female roles. To illustrate the point, try to think of a movie in which a leading female character isn't involved in a romance as a main plot point. It's harder to do than you'd think.

"Twilight" writer Melissa Rosenberg is out to change that. Her new production company, Tall Girls Productions, is out to create strong roles for women in high-concept movies. "Not movies for women in the traditional sense," clarifies Rosenberg, "but more interesting, intriguing, complex roles—and kickass women, as well."

Rosenberg seems to have found her "kickass" character and high-concept story in "Earthseed," a 1983 young adult sci-fi novel by Pamela Sargent. The novel follows a crew of teenagers who are sent through space to find a new inhabitable planet, and must learn to cope without the guidance of adults. The movie adaptation of the book will be the first production under Tall Girls.

The adaptation is especially tempting as Sargent wrote two sequels to the book. Once the "Twilight" series ends, other supernatural teen stories will attempt to take hold as the new franchise in town.

But can "Earthseed" hold up? It's wonderful that Rosenberg wants more complex and high-concept roles for women than just being a love interest, but let's face it...fans like "Twilight" for the romance and the love triangles.
