'Smallville' the Movie?

'Smallville' the Movie? We’ll always wonder: how would Tom Welling have fared as a big-screen “Superman?”

Well, with “Man Of Steel” going forward to reboot the DC Comics flagship franchise once more, we might never find out. But we almost did.

The former “Smallville” Superman told On The Red Carpet that a feature film off-shoot of the departed WB/CW hit chronicling the formative years of Clark Kent almost came to pass two years ago. Even more interestingly, there was also serious discussion of a bridging movie even earlier, between the third and fourth seasons.

"We talked about that between season three and four, when the characters weremoving from high school to college," said Welling. "And we played with the idea and what we found is it wasn't time. But I think that it would have been fun to do a transition movie for those characters. Who knows in the future."

But suppose Warner Bros. had another change of heart and decided to make a “Smallville” film after all. Would Welling still don the suit?

“Sure, why not?” he said.

It’s nice that he doesn’t consider that door closed. But maybe it should be.

“Smallville,” by most accounts, had an ideal ending – Kal el embraces his responsibility, dons the famous colors at last and the final moments of the series are his first in flight as the Man of Steel.

Really, why taint something so great?
