Tupac Hologram Might Tour with Snoop and Dr. Dre
by Andy NeuenschwanderSurprise guest appearances are not much of a shock at the often star-studded Coachella music festival. Surprise guest appearances from rappers who died nearly two decades ago... well, those are still a shock.
Coachella attendees were surprised this weekend to find themselves watching a performance from Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and the late Tupac Shakur. Shakur's computer-generated image was projected onto the stage as a hologram, cleverly allowing the other two rappers to perform with him.
The Digital Domain Media Group, who worked on the visual effects for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," which would win a visual effects Oscar, created the illusion. Now, following the viral success of the stunt, there is serious consideration of having the virtual Tupac go on tour, performing with rappers in venues across the country.
As to the legality of using Tupac's image, it's up to his next of kin to make the decision, unless he makes a statement in his will requesting that his image not be used.
The moral of the story may be this: if you don't want your image to be projected holographically in front of a bunch of California hipsters, make sure your will is in order.
