Trump Won't Stop Making 'Game of Thrones' References, and He Should

Donald Trump is using Game of Thrones imagery to make a sales pitch for his border wall. Not only is he arguably violating GoT's copyright, he's also making an ill-advised reference, given how successful GoT's border wall is in the series. Read on for details.

President Trump had a lot of time on his hands over the holidays. He spent Christmas and New Year’s at the White House, hoping that someone would show up and negotiate. His only companions were the armed guards and likely, the HBO Game of Thrones marathon, judging from his recent references to the show.

Today, he was restless, so he made a surprise appearance at a White House press briefing. And tonight, Trump was on the Game of Thrones motif again, posting on Instagram that “The Wall is Coming.”

Trump has tweaked the HBO series before. A Game of Thrones-esque poster that was featured in a Trump tweet trumpeting the reimposition of sanctions against Iran in November prompted a swift backlash by HBO and GoT cast members. It made a mysterious return at Wednesday’s White House cabinet meeting, strategically placed on the table in front of the president during the Cabinet meeting.

The words “Sanctions are coming” are a play on GoT’s “Winter is Coming” line that has characterized the soon-to-conclude David Benioff/D. B. Weiss-produced series, based on George R.R. Martin’s books.
