'Trophy Wife' Season 1, Episode 18: 'Couples Therapy' Recap
by Shannon KeirnanIt's California History Day and Kate, in an effort to help Pete out, has made chili for the cookoff. He tastes it when she is out of the room and gags.
At the festival, the chili seems to be going over well, however. Diane tries it and recognizes it as Pete's recipe, and wonders why Kate is taking credit. He explains that he dumped hers out and made a new pot, and she accuses him of avoiding confrontation, as he did in his other marriages. He lies and tells Diane that he and Kate are in couples' therapy. Diane offers to take up some of his tasks so he and Kate can go to session.
Pete tells Kate he lied about being in therapy, and they decide to use their free time as a nice date. They go out for a great lunch, but when they come home they find Jackie, who is worried about their marriage. She offers to take Bert if ever needed, and Kate takes that opportunity to say they are going to another session. Pete gets annoyed he now goes to "therapy" twice a week, but Kate says they can take the tennis lessons they've been talking about.
Meg comes over, and Warren is infatuated with her. He and Bert compete for her attention. Hillary decides to use her as a subject for her psych paper on extended adolescence, but can't get Meg to cooperate with the experiments.
Diane comes to the house for Bert but finds out he is with Jackie and she was not told. She goes to Jackie, who explains that she is helping out so Kate and Pete can go see "Dr. J from Philadelphia." Diane tells her that is a basketball player. Jackie and Diane hunt down Pete and Kate, and find them at a tennis lesson. Kate spots them and she and Pete make a run for it.
They're caught, however. Pete is forced to admit he dumped out the chili and re-made it. Kate storms off, and Pete drives alongside her. She tells him she wants to have a better marriage than his previous ones, and that means not avoiding confrontation, and always being honest even if it might hurt her. He promises no more lying.
