'Trophy Wife' Season 1, Episode 11: 'The Big 5-0' Recap

'Trophy Wife' Season 1, Episode 11: 'The Big 5-0' Recap It's Pete's 50th birthday.... well, the day before. As they eat cake, Pete reminds Kate that he hates his birthday and it's cursed. Something terrible always happens, so now they celebrate the night before with cake and just cake.

Kate kisses him goodbye on his birthday and he thanks her for not celebrating it. Yeah, right. Once he leaves she sneaks Meg in with all the stuff she has planned.

Jackie meets Diane at her office to get the money she owes for Pete's present. When Diane finds out it's wind chimes, she won't cut the check. She takes the afternoon off to go find a proper gift.

At home, the kids accept a package for Pete that is perishable, so they open it and find live lobsters.

Diane forces Jackie to return the wind-chimes. The owner tells them it's non-refundable. Diane rolls her sleeves up and chews her out.

Kate arrives at Pete's work in a trench coat... but he is in a meeting. She finally gets him free and takes him for a multi-phase day, where, eventually, the coat will come off. As she explains how she is wearing nothing underneath, Pete hits the back end of a police car. Of course his license is expired, but since it's his birthday the officer agrees to just send him to the DMV to get it renewed.

Diane and Jackie go to pick up a gift certificate for a massage for Pete, and get talked into a massge themselves. Diane is horrified to find they signed up for the couples massage. She tries to go with it, but gets annoyed and insults the masseuse. They get kicked out, and Jackie yells at Diane for always offending her friends.

After school the kids finds the lobsters have escaped. They track them down, but when Bert finds out they're meant for dinner, he runs off with them. They make him a BLT to draw him out, and explain to him where meat comes from.

At the DMV the wait is ridiculous. Kate goes to get phase 2 while Pete waits in line. Finally he goes up, but when he puts on his glasses to read the forms, he finds out he has to take the road test. He waits for Kate to pull up with his car, complaining about his curse as his beautiful young wife pulls up in phase 2 - a rented red sportscar. He fails the road test in the car.

Diane goes back and apologizes to the owner of the shop with the wind chimes. They realize they never got the gift certficate. They re-buy the wind chimes Pete will surely hate.

Kate takes Pete to his birthday lunch, getting a little insistent. Pete asks her if she is having his mid-life crisis. Kate begins to break down about how comfortable she has been with getting older. She loves staying in and pj pants. Pete agrees they should go party, but they come right back out, as it's too loud.

They go to a quiet dive bar for a drink and plan to get home and in bed soon. They dance to the jukebox, and Kate's coat comes open. She agrees they will never celebrate his birthday again.
