Top Gun and 'A Quiet Place' Sequels Delayed Until 2021
by EG
Paramount has announced a delay in the release of some of its big upcoming movies, including the highly anticipated sequels to Top Gun and A Quiet Place. The announcement comes after a similar announcement from Disney. The moves by the studios make it seem likely that the movie industry won't return to business as usual in 2020. Read on for details.
Paramount is pushing back the release of marquee titles A Quiet Place Part II and Top Gun: Maverick from this year to 2021 amid the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic.
The studio announced Thursday evening that John Krasinski's A Quiet Place Part II is being delayed from Sept. 4, 2020, to April 23, 2021, while Top Gun: Maverick — which sees Tom Cruise reprise his titular role — is moving from Dec. 23, 2020, to July 1, 2021.
This marks the second time that the films have been pushed back because of theater closures and production delays caused by the pandemic. The delay isn't great news for cinema owners, who are in need of new product upon reopening.
"We truly believe that there is no movie-viewing experience like the one enjoyed in theaters," Paramount president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson said in a statement. Added his international colleague Mark Viane, "We are committed to the theatrical experience and our exhibition partners, and want to stress that we are confident that, when the time comes, audiences everywhere will once again enjoy the singular joy of seeing Paramount films on the big screen."
The announcement came hours after Disney announced a raft of release date changes for many of its high-profile films, including unscheduling late-August tentpole Mulan.
The long-awaited Top Gun sequel returns Cruise to star alongside franchise newcomers Glen Powell and Miles Teller. Skydance is a partner on the film.
Krasinski wrote and directed A Quiet Place II, which stars original castmembers Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. Series newcomers include Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou.
