'Top Gun 2?' Here's What We Know!

"Top Gun 2" is happening, folks. Eventually.

A sequel to the iconic 1986 flick has been in the works since 2010, without much progress. Director Tony Scott was scouting locations in 2012, but in August of that year, he committed suicide.

The project has inched on, however, and now we know a few things about the "Top Gun" to come, including which major character will be returning...

It's Maverick (Tom Cruise), obviously!

So what do we know at this juncture?

David Ellison discussed the sequel at a press event for "Terminator: Genisys" on Friday.

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay now," he said. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today...

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no 'Top Gun' without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. It is I don't think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak."

Cruise has not commented yet on his upcoming return, and there has been no word yet if other characters from the original film, such as Val Kilmer or Kelly McGillis, will be appearing.

In 2014 co-producer Jerry Bruckheimer explained that "Top Gun 2" will be dealing with advanced technology, and the way fighter pilots fit into this new automated world.

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay."

"Technology has changed obviously since we made the first one," Bruckheimer also said. "So, I think we're going to take advantage of what the world is like today, you know with the drones really kind of taking over in a lot of our wars...Is the pilot obsolete? No, I don't think so...we're going to hopefully highlight both worlds."
