Top Films of 2016: It's Disney's World

There's been a shake up of late in the list of 2016's top movies, but the one thing that hasn't changed is that the list is still dominated by a single studio. No matter what they do, other studios can't seem to loosen Disney's grip on the wallets of American movie goers.

For the first few months of the year, a non-Disney property, Fox's Deadpool, was the reigning box-office champion, but that changed once the summer movie season got rolling. In May, Disney/Marvel's Captain America: Civil War took the lead, and this month Disney/Pixar's Finding Dory moved into the top spot for the year so far.

At this point, Deadpool, currently in third place, is the only non-Disney movie in the top five. It's followed by The Jungle Book and Zootopia, Disney movies both. After that, Warner Bros.' Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice sits in sixth place, but with its run already finished, it won't move any higher.

Disney is consistent in getting its movies to the top. Outside its four top-five finishers, you have to slide all the way down to the seventeenth spot to find the disappointing Alice Through the Looking Glass.

With Universal's The Secret Life Of Pets charging up the ranks, and other potential blockbusters hitting theaters later in the year, there's still a chance that Disney's near-total dominance could slip. Then again, Disney has some of its own potential blockbusters up its sleeve, too. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, anyone?
