Top 5 Movies to Get Excited About This Christmas
by Shannon KeirnanWith a strong fan following already, Les Miserables is going to hit the theaters hard this December. Staring greats like Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Siefried, and Russell Crow, the gorgeous singing and cinematography, combined with the raw emotion from the actors, promises one of those movies you disappear into as you follow Jean Valjean’s road to redemption.
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”
Every Peter Jackman fan can rejoice. “Lord of the Rings” wasn’t enough to keep the world happy. We need more Middle Earth! If it can live up to the epic qualities of its predecessors, be assured no one will leave the theater unhappy. The prequel to “LOTR,” “The Hobbit” will introduce us to Bilbo Baggins and the original journey.
Tackling such a well-loved book is tricky, but director Ang Lee is the one to take on the best-seller. The special effects look incredible, and such a strange but beautiful story was meant to be shared visually, as well as through prose. It follows a young boy, stranded in the ocean by a shipwreck with only a handful of zoo animals—including a huge tiger—for companionship.
Another adaptation from a beloved book. Kerouac’s classic novel comes to life in a dark and psychological drama that follows a young writer whose life gets turned upside down by a free-spirited friend and his lady as they cross the country. Bonus, you get to see Kristen Stewart topless.
In a slightly different vein, “This is 40” looks both heartwarming and hilarious. Spinning off of the raunchy “Knocked Up,” the movie will take us into the lives of sparring couple Pete and Debbie, who must face aging together.
