'Hangover: Part III?' Director Todd Phillips Has an Idea for a Very Different Third Movie

As the sequel to a hugely popular first film, talk at the press conference for "The Hangover: Part II" inevitably turned to a third installment. As reported by Collider today, not only did director Todd Phillips not totally avoid the topic, he's embraced it.

"If we were to do a third one, and quite honestly we really haven't talked about it as we just finished the movie two weeks ago...I think we have a clear idea where that would head, and it's certainly not in the same template you've seen these movies. Obviously we always envisioned it as a trilogy as you can imagine [laughter], and the third would very much [be] a finale and an ending." said Philips.

"The most I could say about it, and I haven't discussed it with these actors, is that it is not following that template but very much a new idea. As far as where it takes place...I'm very open like the Olympic committee to being pitched and presented cities...flown around with wine and women and bribed and then I will make my decision," said the director.

Todd Phillips is awesome, and I'm not being sarcastic.

He's candid in that sort of constructed way, but that still reveals that he knows the insanity of the whole affair. Even though he's made ten feature films, "The Hangover" is one of only three that have really caught fire with audiences ("Road Trip" and "Old School" being the other two).

He knows a good things when he sees it and has no problem shilling it 'til it dies, and seems pretty okay with that. And that's great. Nothing worse than taking a grandiose attitude towards a franchise of films you're not supposed to remember until you're asked to pay for them again.

But taking the gang in a new direction is a very wise idea.

I loved every second of "The Hangover," but I'm a little skeptical about a straight retread of the plot in "Part II." Still, I have to admit I'll probably catch it sooner or later - if it's half as insane as the first one, that's time well spent.
